A Dermatologist is a medical doctor who has undergone extensive training to understand conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails. This training first requires completion of medical school and a one year internship. Dermatology specialty training is three years long. This training involves significant time devoted to the study of normal and abnormal skin, hair and nail conditions under the supervision of qualified dermatology staff. After the completion of training, there is an examination to become “board certified”. Dr. McEwen is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
Dr. McEwen performed his residency training at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego California. His training included:
- The diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, melanomas, moles and skin tumors.
- The management of contact dermatitis and other inflammatory skin disorders.
- The recognition of the skin findings of systemic and infectious diseases.
- Dermatopathology: the microscopic diagnosis of skin, hair and nail disease.
- Surgical techniques used in dermatology for biopsies and MOHS surgery.
- Laser surgery and treatment.
- Hospital care of very severe skin disorders.
- Cosmetic disorders of the skin, including hair loss, scars, and the skin changes associated with aging.
There is no substitute for this training and background when it comes to providing quality skin care. At Lee’s Summit Dermatology Associates, we look forward to helping you with your dermatology needs.
